Mikio Kuroda (1972–) is a Japanese hunter and nonfiction writer. After graduating from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, he worked for Mitsubishi Corporation before joining NHK in 1999, where he produced nature programs including “Darwin ga Kita!” Fascinated by the worldview of Indigenous peoples in North America, he repeatedly traveled to Canada and gained experience in hunting. He later began hunting in Hokkaido and, after taking early retirement from NHK in 2023, moved there permanently. In “Kumaoi-bito-tachi: Higuma no Toriko ni Natta Junin,” Kuroda profiles ten people—including hunters and researchers—whose lives have become closely connected to brown bears, documenting the varied and sometimes dangerous relationships between humans and wild animals.
