Kenji Kuroda is a Japanese scholar of Iranian and Islamic studies and an associate professor at the National Museum of Ethnology. Through fieldwork in Iran, he has studied the relationship between religious institutions, the military and the state, as well as religious practice and memories of war. In “Senso no Kioku to Kokka” (War Memory and the State), he draws on interviews with veterans of the Iran–Iraq War to examine how the dead are commemorated as martyrs and how those who returned have lived since the war. “Iran Gendaishi” (Modern Iranian History) traces the state established after the 1979 revolution through domestic politics, the economy, society and foreign relations. “Kindai Nihon ni Okeru Islam no Tenkan” (Changing Understandings of Islam in Modern Japan) uses accounts by a Japanese mission to Europe and a record of a 1907 visit to Mecca to investigate how people in Japan came to understand Islam. He received the Daido Life Encouragement Award for Area Studies in 2026.
