Rie Kudan (1990–) is a Japanese novelist. She made her literary debut in 2021 when "Warui Ongaku" ("Bad Music") won the 126th Bungakukai New Writers' Award. Her fiction explores technology, language, the body, and identity through bold and highly original narrative experiments. In 2023, "Schoolgirl" received the Noma Literary New Face Prize, and in 2024 she won the 170th Akutagawa Prize for "Tokyo-to Dōjōtō" ("Tokyo Sympathy Tower"), a novel that attracted international attention for its use of generative AI during the writing process. Kudan is widely recognized for pushing the boundaries of contemporary Japanese fiction and expanding the possibilities of literary expression.
