Yoko Kubo (born 1980) is a Japanese translator of children’s literature and picture books. After studying English literature at the University of Tokyo, she worked as a children’s-book editor before becoming a translator. Lynne Kelly’s “Song for a Whale” follows a deaf girl who tries to help a whale whose unusual voice keeps it apart from other whales. Kallie George’s Heartwood Hotel series explores belonging and friendship through stories set in a woodland hotel for animals. Kubo also translates Onjali Q. Raúf’s fiction, including “The Night Bus Hero,” which approaches prejudice and relationships through the experiences of children. Her work brings young readers stories of finding connection and acting for others.
