ジャーナリストのロゼン・モルガとまとめた『ウイグル大虐殺からの生還 再教育収容所地獄の2年間』(原題 “Rescapée du goulag chinois”、英題 “How I Survived a Chinese Re-education Camp: A Uyghur Woman’s Story”)では、自らの経験を一人称で記した。
Gulbahar Haitiwaji (born 1966) is a writer and human rights advocate who has documented her detention in Xinjiang and testified about the treatment of Uyghurs. She worked as an engineer in the region’s oil industry before moving to France with her two daughters to join her husband, who had sought asylum there. In 2016, she was called back to China to complete paperwork concerning her pension. From January 2017 to March 2019, she was held in police facilities and two “reeducation” camps. She then remained in an apartment under police surveillance until August 2019, when she returned to France following her daughter’s campaign for her release and intervention by French diplomats. Working with journalist Rozenn Morgat, Haitiwaji recorded these experiences in “Rescapée du goulag chinois,” translated into English as “How I Survived a Chinese Re-education Camp: A Uyghur Woman’s Story” and into Japanese as “Uiguru Daigyakusatsu kara no Seikan: Saikyoiku Shuyojo Jigoku no Ni Nenkan.” Her first-person narrative moves from family life before her detention to interrogations, constant surveillance, and compulsory political instruction. It describes the erosion of memory, identity, and her sense of self. Morgat supplied the prologue and epilogue, connecting Haitiwaji’s experiences with the wider situation in Xinjiang. A US paperback edition published in 2024 added a new introduction by Haitiwaji. After returning to France, she continued to give public testimony. She appeared before the Uyghur Tribunal in London in 2021 and a US House of Representatives hearing in March 2023, describing her treatment in custody and her family’s efforts to secure her release.
