Grace Paley (1922–2007) was an American short story writer, poet, and activist. Born in the Bronx to Jewish immigrant parents, she drew on the voices and everyday life of New York for her fiction. Her first collection, “The Little Disturbances of Man,” portrays women navigating work, children, love, and neighborhood life. Characters from that book return in “Enormous Changes at the Last Minute” and “Later the Same Day,” giving her stories a shared social world. “Enormous Changes at the Last Minute” was a finalist for the National Book Award, as was her later “Collected Stories.” Beyond writing, Paley took part in protests against the Vietnam War and nuclear weapons, and she taught writing.
