Cristina García (born 1958) is a Cuban-born American novelist who moved to the United States with her family as a young child. Her debut novel, “Dreaming in Cuban,” follows three generations of women divided by the Cuban Revolution: Celia remains in Cuba and supports the revolution, her daughter Lourdes builds a life in the United States, and Lourdes’s daughter Pilar feels drawn to the island her mother left behind. The novel was a finalist for the 1992 National Book Award. In “I Wanna Be Your Shoebox,” Yumi worries about a possible move and the future of her school orchestra when she learns that her grandfather Saul is seriously ill. She asks him to tell her about his life, and he recalls experiences she has never heard about, including the loss of his mother when he was about Yumi’s age.
