Clive Finlayson (born 1955) is a Gibraltarian evolutionary ecologist whose research spans human evolution and avian biogeography. Born in Gibraltar, he studied zoology at the University of Liverpool, earned a doctorate from Oxford University in 1980, and subsequently completed a master’s degree in museum studies at the University of Leicester. He is Director, Chief Scientist, and Curator of the Gibraltar National Museum. His research at Gorham’s Cave and other sites examines Neanderthal life and environmental adaptation through archaeological remains and animal bones. He was appointed MBE in 2003. Investigating Neanderthal extinction and modern human survival, “The Humans Who Went Extinct: Why Neanderthals Died Out and We Survived,” published in Japanese as “Soshite Saigo ni Hito ga Nokotta,” challenges explanations based solely on differences in intelligence or culture. It considers the roles of climate change, habitats, geography, and chance in shaping the fortunes of human populations. Exploring cognitive abilities through bird catching, feather use, and cave engravings, “The Smart Neanderthal: Bird Catching, Cave Art, and the Cognitive Revolution” draws on discoveries by Finlayson and his colleagues to argue for symbolic behavior among Neanderthals. It questions the idea of a sudden cognitive revolution unique to modern humans, proposing instead that complex behaviors developed gradually among different human populations.
