Clint Smith (born 1988) is an American poet and journalist whose work focuses on race, history, education, and inequality. Born and raised in New Orleans, he graduated from Davidson College and earned a Ph.D. in education from Harvard University. A former high school teacher, he is now a staff writer at The Atlantic. In "How the Word Is Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America," Smith travels to plantations, prisons, Civil War sites, museums, and other places in the United States and West Africa to examine how the history of slavery is remembered, presented, and sometimes obscured. Through conversations with guides, visitors, historians, and local communities, he shows how public memory continues to shape Americans' understanding of slavery and its legacy in the present.
