Clint Smith is a poet and journalist concerned with race and historical memory. Raised in New Orleans, he studied at Davidson College and earned a doctorate in education at Harvard. He taught high-school English in Maryland before becoming a staff writer at The Atlantic. How the Word Is Passed investigated the remembrance of slavery at plantations, prisons and memorials, listening to the people who interpret and inhabit those places. It won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction. His poetry collection Above Ground considered fatherhood, placing intimate experiences of caring for children alongside the violence, loss and inherited histories that shape their world. Just Beneath the Soil, announced for 2027, will extend his investigation of memory to World War II, following survivors and other witnesses across several continents to examine experiences left out of dominant American accounts of the conflict.
