Christobel Kent is a British novelist whose work includes Italian-set crime fiction and psychological suspense about violence within families and intimate relationships. Born in London, she grew up in London and Essex, spending part of her childhood aboard a Thames sailing barge at Maldon with siblings and stepsiblings. She read English at Cambridge and worked in publishing and teaching English as a foreign language. She also lived in Modena and Florence. Her first novel appeared in 2003, followed by further fiction set in Italy. “A Time of Mourning” (2009), also published as “The Drowning River,” introduced former policeman and private investigator Sandro Cellini. Set in a rain-soaked Florence, it connects an architect’s apparent suicide with the disappearance of a foreign art student, bringing the city’s everyday lives and unresolved histories into the investigation. With “The Crooked House” (2015), Kent moved to the Essex coast. A woman who survived the murder of her family and has built a new life under another name returns to the village where it happened. The novel follows the conflicts between a place’s memories and the account of the past its survivor has believed. “What We Did” (2018) centres on a woman confronted by the music teacher who sexually abused her as a child. Recognising the danger he poses to another girl, she fights back and must face the consequences. The novel was shortlisted for the Crime Writers’ Association Gold Dagger in 2019.
