Christine Schutt (1948–) is an American novelist and short story writer whose compressed prose and vivid imagery explore loneliness, loss, and unease within families and intimate relationships. She earned an MFA in creative writing from Columbia University. Her debut novel, “Florida,” was a finalist for the 2004 National Book Award for Fiction. “All Souls,” set at a Manhattan girls’ school and centered on a seriously ill student and those around her, was a finalist for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Her story collection “Pure Hollywood” examines desire and emotional desolation beneath wealth and glamour, bringing dark humor to its portrayals of troubled lives.
