Christian Bommarius (born 1958) is a German journalist whose work focuses on law, politics, and modern German history. Born in Frankfurt am Main, he studied German literature and law. After working as a journalist, including as a correspondent covering Germany’s Federal Constitutional Court, he served as an editor at the Berliner Zeitung from 1998 to 2017. He subsequently became a columnist for the Süddeutsche Zeitung and continues to work as an independent journalist. In 2018, he received the Heinrich Mann Prize from Berlin’s Akademie der Künste for his essays and journalism. In “Todeswalzer: Der Sommer 1944,” whose title means “Death Waltz: The Summer of 1944,” he reconstructs a period when the Allied advance brought Nazi Germany closer to defeat while the mass murder of European Jews continued. Drawing on diaries, eyewitness accounts, newspaper reports, and other records, he moves between the perspectives of German soldiers, American troops, war correspondents, and civilians to trace events unfolding simultaneously across Europe. He juxtaposes the deportation of Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz with the return of ordinary pleasures in liberated areas, examining how killing continued even as the end of the war came into view. Through these contrasting experiences, he connects military and political events with the daily lives of people caught in the violence.
