クロエ・アリジス（Chloe Aridjis）は、メキシコ系アメリカ人の小説家。ニューヨークに生まれ、オランダとメキシコで育つ。ハーバード大学で学んだのち、オックスフォード大学で19世紀フランスの詩とマジックを研究し、博士号を取得した。小説のほか美術についても執筆し、メキシコ生まれの画家レオノーラ・キャリントンの展覧会でゲスト・キュレーターを務めるなど、文学と美術の双方で活動している。代表作『Sea Monsters』（未邦訳）は、1980年代末のメキシコを舞台に、17歳の少女ルイサが知り合ったばかりの青年とメキシコシティを離れ、太平洋岸のオアハカ州シポリテへ向かう物語。ソ連のサーカスから逃げ出したというウクライナ人の小人たちを探す空想を抱きながら海辺をさまよう少女の現実と幻想を重ね、家出によって手にした自由への高揚が次第に戸惑いや幻滅へと変わっていく過程を描いている。同作で2020年PEN／フォークナー賞を受賞した。
Chloe Aridjis is a Mexican American novelist who was born in New York and grew up in the Netherlands and Mexico. After studying at Harvard University, she earned a doctorate from the University of Oxford, where her research focused on nineteenth-century French poetry and magic. Alongside her fiction, she has written extensively about art and served as guest curator of an exhibition devoted to the British-Mexican surrealist artist Leonora Carrington. Her representative novel, "Sea Monsters," is set in Mexico in the late 1980s and follows seventeen-year-old Luisa, who leaves Mexico City with a boy she barely knows and travels to the Pacific coast of Oaxaca. Fascinated by reports of a troupe of Ukrainian dwarfs who have supposedly escaped from a Soviet circus, Luisa searches for them while drifting through the beach community of Zipolite. Blending her inner fantasies with the realities of life as a runaway, the novel traces the excitement, uncertainty, and gradual disenchantment of adolescence. "Sea Monsters" received the 2020 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction.
