Koichiro Kokubun (born 1974) is a Japanese philosopher. Born in Chiba Prefecture, he graduated from Waseda University and completed his doctorate at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, where he is now a professor. His research focuses on early modern philosophy, particularly Spinoza, and contemporary French thought, while his broader work addresses freedom, responsibility, democracy, and consumer society. In his representative book “Hima to Taikutsu no Rinrigaku” (The Ethics of Leisure and Boredom), Kokubun distinguishes leisure as the objective possession of free time from boredom as the inability to enjoy it, using the history of philosophy to examine why people continually seek new stimulation and consumption. The book received the Kinokuniya Humanities Book Award.
