Hitoshi Komiya (born 1976) is a Japanese political scientist and historian and a professor in the College of Literature at Aoyama Gakuin University. After graduating from the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Law, he earned a doctorate from its Graduate Schools for Law and Politics. His research focuses on contemporary Japanese history, political and diplomatic history, and media history, drawing on interviews with political figures and previously unavailable archival materials to examine the occupation period and the formation of postwar conservative politics. In Showa Tenno no Haiboku: Nihonkoku Kenpo Daiichijo o Meguru Tatakai, Komiya traces the competing efforts of Emperor Showa, the imperial court, the Japanese government, and the Allied occupation authorities during the drafting of the postwar Constitution, showing how the emperor was redefined from sovereign ruler to “the symbol of the State and of the unity of the people.”
