Haruka Kohama is a Japanese translator of English-language books on psychology, science, and culture who also works on English subtitles. Dennis Proffitt and Drake Baer’s “Perception” examines how what people see is shaped by their bodies, experiences, and social relationships, rather than being a simple copy of the outside world. Lisa Genova’s “Remember” explains how the brain forms memories and considers the roles of remembering and forgetting. Bruce Hood’s “Possessed” explores how the sense of ownership affects identity and relationships. Through these translations, Kohama introduces scientific approaches to experiences that are familiar in everyday life but whose underlying mechanisms can be surprising.
