Rohan Kōda (1867–1947) was a Japanese novelist and essayist whose works are renowned for their elegant prose and deep grounding in classical Japanese and Chinese learning. Active from the Meiji through the Shōwa periods, he wrote fiction, essays, and literary criticism that helped shape modern Japanese literature. His best-known novella, "Gojūnotō" ("The Five-Storied Pagoda"), tells the story of a master carpenter devoted to building a pagoda, portraying the pride, perseverance, and craftsmanship that define his life's work.
