Masako Kobayashi translates books on medicine, exploration, history, and literature. She left Meiji Gakuin University’s English department to join Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, studied at the University of Lisbon, and took early retirement from the ministry in 1988 to pursue translation. Stephen R. Bown’s “Scurvy” follows the search for an explanation and treatment for a disease that devastated crews during long voyages. In Ranulph Fiennes’s “Shackleton,” she translated a biography that examines Antarctic exploration and decisions under extreme conditions from the perspective of an author who was himself an explorer. Her translation of Bown’s “1494” connects conflict within the Spanish royal family with negotiations between Spain and Portugal over claims to the wider world.
