Cormac McCarthy (1933–2023) was an American novelist. In “All the Pretty Horses,” sixteen-year-old John Grady Cole loses the prospect of inheriting his family’s ranch and rides into Mexico with a friend. There he encounters love and violence. The novel won the 1992 National Book Award. “No Country for Old Men” begins when Llewelyn Moss takes money left at the scene of a drug deal gone wrong. A killer pursues him while Sheriff Bell investigates the escalating violence. The novel was adapted into the Coen brothers’ film of the same name. In the Pulitzer Prize-winning “The Road,” civilization has collapsed and plant life has died out. A man who has lost his wife heads south toward the sea with his young son.
