Colin M. Fisher is an organizational behavior scholar whose research examines group dynamics, creativity, improvisation and leadership. He studied jazz trumpet at the New England Conservatory of Music and improvisation in the arts at New York University. As a professional musician, he was a longstanding member of the Either/Orchestra, touring and recording with the ensemble. Experiencing how fellow performers shaped his improvisation prompted his interest in processes that cannot be explained by individual ability alone. He earned his Ph.D. in organizational behavior at Harvard University in 2010, taught at Boston University, and joined University College London’s School of Management in 2015. His research has examined helping and coaching teams, collective creativity and decision-making, with particular attention to timing and how groups develop over time. The Collective Edge: Unlocking the Secret Power of Groups brought this work to a general readership through questions of cooperation, conformity, competition and leadership. Drawing on group research and examples from business, sports and culture, it examined why teams can perform below the combined abilities of their members. The book emphasized the structures and conditions established before a group begins working, alongside questions of disagreement within teams and conflict between groups.
