Colin Dexter (1930–2017) was a British crime novelist and the creator of Inspector Morse. A former classics teacher, he set the series in Oxford, where Morse and his colleague Sergeant Lewis investigate crimes through close attention to testimony, clues, and contradictions. The first novel, “Last Bus to Woodstock” (『ウッドストック行最終バス』), begins with the murder of a young woman. Dexter went on to write thirteen Morse novels, including “The Way Through the Woods” (『森を抜ける道』), bringing together Morse’s intuition and elaborate deduction. His awards included the Crime Writers’ Association’s Gold Dagger, and in 1997 he received its Diamond Dagger for his contribution to crime fiction. The Morse novels were adapted for television, bringing Dexter’s Oxford mysteries to a wider audience.
