Colin Asher is an American journalist and biographer. He earned a master’s degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, and his work has appeared in The New Republic, The Baffler, and the Los Angeles Review of Books. In “The Midnight Special: The Secret Prison History of American Music,” Asher traces the lives of Lead Belly, Elmo Hope, Johnny Cash, Ike White, and Tupac Shakur to examine how prisons, discriminatory policing, and mass incarceration have shaped American music and the careers of its musicians.
