桐野夏生(きりの なつお、1951年 - )は、石川県金沢市生まれの小説家。1993年に『顔に降りかかる雨』で江戸川乱歩賞を受賞し、1998年に『OUT』で日本推理作家協会賞、翌年には『柔らかな頬』で直木賞を受賞した。その後も『グロテスク』『東京島』『ナニカアル』『燕は戻ってこない』などで主要な文学賞を受賞し、2015年に紫綬褒章、2024年に日本芸術院賞を受賞。2021年から日本ペンクラブ会長を務める。代表作『OUT』は、深夜の弁当工場で働く主婦たちが殺人事件をきっかけに犯罪へ巻き込まれていく過程を通して、女性を取り巻く貧困や家庭、労働の閉塞感を描いた犯罪小説で、英訳版は日本人作家として初めてエドガー賞候補となった。
Natsuo Kirino (born 1951) is a Japanese novelist from Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture. She won the Edogawa Rampo Prize for "Kao ni Furikakaru Ame" in 1993, followed by the Mystery Writers of Japan Award for "OUT" in 1998 and the Naoki Prize for "Yawarakana Hoho" in 1999. Her later works, including "Grotesque," "Tokyo Island," "Nanika Aru," and "Tsubame wa Modotte Konai," have received numerous major literary awards. She was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 2015 and the Japan Art Academy Prize in 2024, and has served as president of the Japan P.E.N. Club since 2021. Her best-known novel, "OUT," follows a group of women working the night shift at a boxed-lunch factory whose involvement in a murder draws them into an increasingly dangerous criminal world. Through their lives, Kirino depicts the pressures of poverty, work, family, and gender in contemporary Japan; the English translation became the first work by a Japanese author to be nominated for the Edgar Award.
