Kasuga Taichi (born 1977) is a researcher of Japanese film history and period dramas. Drawing on interviews with actors, directors, and studio crews, he examines how films and television series were made. “Jidaigeki wa Shinazu! Kanzenban” traces period drama production in Kyoto’s Uzumasa studios, using the recollections of craftspeople behind series such as “Zatoichi” and “Hissatsu.” “Akan Yatsura” follows the history of Toei’s Kyoto studio as its filmmakers moved from period dramas toward yakuza films and adapted their productions to changing audiences. In “Naze Jidaigeki wa Horobiru no ka,” he examines the shift from cinema to television and the disappearance of regular broadcast slots to explain why period dramas became harder to produce.
