Mitsuyo Kakuta (born 1967) is a Japanese novelist and translator. After graduating from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Waseda University, she made her literary debut by winning the Kaien Prize for New Writers for "Kōfuku na Yūgi" in 1990. Through subjects including family, marriage, child-rearing, poverty, and caregiving, her fiction examines loneliness and constraint in everyday life, as well as relationships altered by social position and personal choices. Her best-known work, "Taigan no Kanojo," received the Naoki Prize in 2005. The novel follows the friendship between Sayoko, a thirty-five-year-old homemaker, and Aoi, a business owner of the same age who hires her to work for a house-cleaning service. Alternating between their present relationship and Aoi’s school years marked by bullying and isolation, it portrays the distance that marriage and motherhood can create between women and the choices both make in attempting to remain connected to others.
