Katalin Karikó (born 1955) is a biochemist whose research has focused on the therapeutic use of messenger RNA (mRNA). She grew up in Hungary, studied biology at József Attila University in Szeged, and earned her doctorate in biochemistry in 1982. After working at the Biological Research Center of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, she moved to the United States in 1985 and continued her research at Temple University and other institutions. From 1989 she worked at the University of Pennsylvania on delivering mRNA into cells so that they could produce useful proteins. A major obstacle was the immune response provoked by laboratory-made RNA. Working with Drew Weissman, she showed that modifications to RNA nucleosides could suppress immune recognition. Their work published in 2005 became a foundation for the medical application of mRNA. She joined BioNTech in 2013 and worked on modified mRNA development. These discoveries underpinned the technology used in the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines. She and Weissman received the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries concerning nucleoside base modifications. In her memoir “Breaking Through: My Life in Science,” published in Japanese as “Breakthrough: Nobel-sho Kagakusha Katalin Kariko Jiden,” she traced her life from childhood in communist Hungary through migration with her family to the United States, difficulties securing research support and employment, scientific collaboration, and development work in industry. She recounted the long effort to turn RNA into a therapeutic tool through both experimental setbacks and the experiences of an immigrant researcher and mother.
