Karla Cornejo Villavicencio (1989–) is an Ecuadorian American writer and journalist. She moved to the United States as a child and grew up undocumented in New York. After graduating from Harvard University, she pursued doctoral studies in American Studies at Yale University. Blending personal experience with reporting, “The Undocumented Americans” portrays undocumented people across the United States, including workers exposed to toxic debris after September 11, day laborers, and residents affected by the Flint water crisis. The book was a finalist for the 2020 National Book Award for Nonfiction. Her debut novel, “Catalina,” follows an undocumented Harvard student and examines immigration policy, class, and the contradictions of elite education; it was longlisted for the 2024 National Book Award for Fiction.
