Karen Tei Yamashita (1951–) is a third-generation Japanese American novelist and playwright born in California. She spent nearly a decade in Brazil researching the history of Japanese immigration, an experience that became central to her fiction. “Through the Arc of the Rain Forest” uses magical realism to examine development, capitalism, and ecological destruction in the Amazon, while “Tropic of Orange” follows interconnected lives across the United States–Mexico border. “I Hotel,” her account of Asian American activism surrounding San Francisco’s International Hotel, was a finalist for the National Book Award. In 2021, the National Book Foundation awarded her the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters for a body of work that explores migration, borders, globalization, and Asian American history through multiple voices and experimental forms.
