Sayo Katsuda is a Japanese translator of medical documents and medical nonfiction. She graduated in history from Osaka City University’s Faculty of Literature and spent more than twenty years translating in medicine and medical devices. Her translation of Danielle Ofri’s “When We Do Harm” examines medical errors through complex systems, teamwork, and working conditions rather than attributing them solely to individual failings. In Wendy Moore’s “Endell Street,” Katsuda translated a history of the military hospital run by women doctors in Britain during the First World War, connecting medical work with the struggle for women’s suffrage. She also translated Irvin D. Yalom and Marilyn Yalom’s “A Matter of Death and Life.” The psychiatrist and literary scholar alternated accounts of illness and approaching death; after Marilyn’s death, Irvin continued the record through his experience of grief and loss.
