Toshiko Kanzawa (1924–2026) was a Japanese children’s writer and poet. Born in Fukuoka Prefecture, she spent her early years in Hokkaido and Sakhalin and graduated from Bunka Gakuin. Her work encompassed poetry, children’s songs, picture books, short stories, and novels, often beginning with a child’s sense of wonder. In “Kuma no Ko Ufu,” a collection about an inquisitive bear cub, everyday encounters with family and other animals lead to questions about identity, the body, and how different lives can be compared. Illustrated by Yosuke Inoue, the stories give serious attention to the cub’s seemingly simple puzzles. In “Furaipan Jiisan,” illustrated by Seiichi Horiuchi, an elderly frying pan leaves the kitchen and encounters storms and jungle animals, turning a familiar household object into an adventurous traveler. Kanzawa received the Japanese Association of Writers for Children Prize, and “Taran no Hakucho” won the grand prize of the Sankei Children’s Book Award. Her stories animate animals, landscapes, and ordinary objects while exploring the strangeness and pleasure of being alive.
