Gump (born 1980) is a Japanese manga artist who made his commercial debut in 2009. In 2019, while publishing under a different name, he was diagnosed with stage IV colorectal cancer at the age of thirty-nine. His representative work, “Danchōtei Nichijō,” is an autobiographical manga based on his experiences of medical examinations, chemotherapy, radiation treatment, and surgery; it received the New Creator Prize at the 27th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. The series depicts not only the physical burden of treatment but also long hours spent in hospitals, the sense of separation from the healthy world, life with his wife, and his conflicted decision to transform illness into manga, combining dry humor with unsparing self-observation.
