Gabriel García Márquez (1927–2014) was a Colombian novelist and journalist. After working as a newspaper reporter, he wrote fiction in which extraordinary events are recounted alongside ordinary life. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982. Set in the fictional town of Macondo, “One Hundred Years of Solitude” follows generations of the Buendía family, who founded the town. Civil war and change from outside disrupt Macondo, while members of the family inherit the same names and repeat similar mistakes. “Love in the Time of Cholera” traces a relationship across half a century: Florentino and Fermina fall in love when young, lead separate lives, and face each other again in old age after her husband dies. In “Chronicle of a Death Foretold,” the people of a town know that a murder has been announced. Years later, the narrator gathers their accounts to examine why no one stopped it.
