Takashi Gakuhari is a Japanese life scientist and archaeological scientist specializing in paleogenomics. He earned a doctorate in life sciences from the University of Tokyo and is an associate professor and head of the Archaeological Science Division at Kanazawa University’s Institute for the Study of Ancient Civilizations and Cultural Resources. By analyzing DNA preserved in ancient human bones and teeth, he combines archaeology, anthropology, and molecular biology to investigate population movement and formation. His research produced a complete genome sequence from Jomon-period remains excavated at the Ikawazu shell midden in Aichi Prefecture. Comparative analysis of Jomon, Yayoi, Kofun-period, and present-day populations led his international research team to propose a tripartite model in which three ancestral groups contributed to the genetic formation of modern Japanese people. His representative book, “Nihonjin to wa Nani ka: Watashitachi no Rūtsu o Meguru Nanahyaku-mannen no Monogatari,” traces human origins in Africa, migration to the Japanese archipelago, the arrival of farming populations, and further population movement during the Kofun period through recent ancient-DNA research.
