Carla Power (born 1966) is an American journalist and nonfiction writer. She spent parts of her childhood in Iran, India, Afghanistan, and Egypt and studied modern Middle Eastern studies at the University of Oxford. A former foreign correspondent for Newsweek, she has reported on Muslim societies, religion, culture, and extremism. A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in General Nonfiction, “If the Oceans Were Ink: An Unlikely Friendship and a Journey to the Heart of the Quran” follows her year spent reading the Quran with Islamic scholar Mohammad Akram Nadwi, using their conversations about women’s rights, jihad, and relations with other faiths to examine the distance between the text itself and common Western perceptions of Islam.
