略歴(Biography)
Carl von Clausewitz (1780–1831) was a Prussian military officer and military theorist. He entered the Prussian army at a young age and served during the Napoleonic Wars. Opposed to Prussia's alliance with France in the invasion of Russia, he entered Russian service before later returning to the Prussian army. Drawing on his wartime experience and extensive study of military history, Clausewitz examined war not simply as a matter of battlefield tactics but as a complex phenomenon shaped by political objectives, states, societies, chance, and uncertainty. His major work, "On War" ("Vom Kriege"), published after his death, presents war as an instrument of political purpose while emphasizing how uncertainty, chance, and "friction" disrupt plans in actual conflict. His ideas became a fundamental point of reference for modern thinking about military strategy and international politics.
