Carl Sagan（カール・セーガン、1934–1996）は、アメリカの天文学者、惑星科学者、宇宙生物学者、作家。シカゴ大学で博士号（Ph.D.）を取得し、コーネル大学教授として惑星科学や宇宙生命探査の研究を牽引した。NASAの惑星探査計画にも数多く参画し、ボイジャー計画の「ゴールデンレコード」の制作にも中心的な役割を果たした。卓越した科学コミュニケーターとしても知られ、テレビシリーズ『Cosmos: A Personal Voyage』を通じて宇宙や科学の魅力を世界中に伝えた。1977年刊行の『The Dragons of Eden: Speculations on the Evolution of Human Intelligence』は、人類の知性の進化を宇宙と生命の歴史の中で考察した代表作として高く評価され、1978年のピューリッツァー賞 一般ノンフィクション部門を受賞した。著書に『Cosmos』『Pale Blue Dot』『The Demon-Haunted World』『Billions & Billions』などがある。

Carl Sagan (1934–1996) was an American astronomer, planetary scientist, astrobiologist, and author. After earning his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, he joined the faculty of Cornell University, where he became one of the world's leading authorities on planetary science and the search for extraterrestrial life. He played a key role in numerous NASA space missions, including the creation of the Golden Record carried aboard the Voyager program spacecraft. Widely regarded as one of the greatest science communicators of the twentieth century, he inspired millions through the television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage. His book The Dragons of Eden: Speculations on the Evolution of Human Intelligence won the 1978 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction. His other notable works include Cosmos, Pale Blue Dot, The Demon-Haunted World, and Billions & Billions.
