カール・エリック・フィッシャーは、アメリカの依存症専門医、生命倫理学者。コロンビア大学で臨床精神医学の助教を務め、依存症と回復を専門とする診療にも携わっている。自身も依存症からの回復を続ける当事者であり、『依存症と人類 われわれはアルコール・薬物と共存できるのか』（The Urge: Our History of Addiction）では、古代から現代までの依存症の歴史を医学、宗教、哲学、文学、公共政策などの観点からたどった。依存を意志の弱さや単一の病気として捉える見方を問い直し、その複雑さに応じた多様な治療と支援の必要性を論じている。
Carl Erik Fisher is an American addiction psychiatrist and bioethicist. He is an assistant professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University and also maintains a clinical practice focused on addiction and recovery. Drawing on his own experience of addiction and recovery, “The Urge: Our History of Addiction” traces the history of addiction from antiquity to the present through medicine, religion, philosophy, literature, and public policy. Fisher challenges attempts to explain addiction solely as a failure of will or a single disease and argues for a range of treatments and forms of support suited to its complexity.
