Carissa Véliz is a philosopher specializing in privacy, digital ethics, and AI ethics. She is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Philosophy and the Institute for Ethics in AI at the University of Oxford, as well as a Tutorial Fellow at Hertford College. Her research examines the ethical and political implications of personal data collection, particularly how surveillance and the concentration of data in the hands of technology companies and governments affect freedom, equality, and democracy. In "Privacy Is Power: Why and How You Should Take Back Control of Your Data," she argues that the accumulation of personal data creates significant concentrations of power and calls for a fundamental reassessment of the data economy, while outlining ways for individuals and society to regain control over personal information.
