Keiichiro Hirano (born 1975) is a Japanese novelist. Born in Gamagori, Aichi Prefecture, and raised in Kitakyushu, he made his literary debut while studying law at Kyoto University with “The Eclipse,” a novel set in medieval Europe that received the Akutagawa Prize in 1999. Moving between different styles and subjects, Hirano has developed the concept of “dividualism,” which views the self as a collection of distinct personalities formed through different relationships. His representative novel “A Man” follows a lawyer investigating a deceased man who had lived under another person’s identity, examining how names, personal histories, and relationships shape the self. The novel received the Yomiuri Prize for Literature.
