Shukichi Hirayama (born 1952) is a Japanese critic and former editor. Born in Tokyo, he studied Japanese literature at Keio University and worked for the publisher Bungeishunju, where he edited books and magazines and served as editor in chief of “Shokun!” and “Bungakukai.” Since leaving publishing, he has written biographies and criticism focusing on literary figures, filmmakers, war, and the history of Showa-era Japan. In his representative work “Eto Jun wa Yomigaeru” (Eto Jun Revived), Hirayama draws on the critic’s writings, diaries, letters, and testimony from people who knew him to connect Eto’s life and intellectual development with the history of postwar Japanese thought. The book received the Kobayashi Hideo Prize.
