Takehiko Higuchi (born 1961) is a historian of modern Japan whose research examines society and culture in the Meiji period and the lives of former Tokugawa retainers. Born in Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture, he graduated from Shizuoka University’s Faculty of Humanities in 1984 and became a curator at the Numazu City Meiji Historical Archives. After serving as its senior curator, he joined the National Museum of Japanese History in 2001 and began teaching concurrently at the Graduate University for Advanced Studies in 2003. He earned a doctorate in literature from Osaka University in 2007 and became a professor at both institutions in 2011. His work investigates former shogunal retainers’ participation in the new society through education, military affairs, thought, and religion. In “Kyu Bakushin no Meiji Ishin: Numazu Heigakko to Sono Gunzo,” he traced how people on the losing side of the Restoration found roles in modern society, focusing on the military school established by Shizuoka Domain and its cultivation of personnel. “Numazu Heigakko no Kenkyu” examined the school’s formation, development, and teaching in greater depth. Textbooks, students’ notebooks, and its relationships with local communities, other domains, and the new government revealed an institution whose activities extended beyond military training. In “Meiji no Kyu Bakushin to Sono Shinko” (2023), he studied former retainers’ engagement with Christianity, Tokyujutsu, Seirigaku, and other beliefs. Bringing together religious practitioners and people whose private convictions differed from their public duties, he explored changes in thought and culture during the dismantling of the status system.
