Peter Matthiessen (1927–2014) was an American novelist, naturalist, and environmental activist. After graduating from Yale University, he helped found the literary magazine “The Paris Review” in 1953 and traveled widely to document wilderness and Indigenous communities. “The Snow Leopard,” an account of his Himalayan journey with zoologist George Schaller that interweaves natural observation, grief, and Zen practice, won the National Book Award. He later received the National Book Award for Fiction for “Shadow Country,” a reworking of his trilogy about frontier Florida, making him the only writer to win the award in both fiction and nonfiction. Also a Zen priest, Matthiessen addressed environmental destruction, Indigenous rights, and spiritual inquiry in works including “At Play in the Fields of the Lord.”
