ピーター・ケアリー（Peter Carey、1943年–）は、オーストラリアの小説家。ビクトリア州に生まれ、広告業界で働きながら短編小説を発表したのち、長編小説の執筆に進んだ。19世紀のオーストラリアを舞台に、賭博への情熱で結ばれた男女を描く『オスカーとルシンダ』（Oscar and Lucinda）で1988年、実在の無法者ネッド・ケリーの生涯を本人の手記という形式で再構成した『ケリー・ギャングの真実の歴史』（True History of the Kelly Gang）で2001年のブッカー賞を受賞した。同賞を2度受賞した数少ない作家の一人である。植民地支配の歴史や国家を形づくる神話、社会の周縁に置かれた人々を、史実と大胆な虚構を組み合わせて描いている。
Peter Carey (1943–) is an Australian novelist. Born in Victoria, he worked in advertising while publishing short fiction before turning to novels. He won the Booker Prize in 1988 for “Oscar and Lucinda,” about two people united by their passion for gambling in nineteenth-century Australia, and again in 2001 for “True History of the Kelly Gang,” an imaginative reconstruction of the life of the outlaw Ned Kelly presented as his own written testimony. Carey is one of the few writers to have received the prize twice. His fiction combines historical material with bold invention to examine colonialism, national myths, and the lives of people pushed to the margins of society.
