ヒシャーム・マタール（Hisham Matar、1970年 - ）は、リビア人の両親のもとニューヨークに生まれ、トリポリとカイロで育った小説家、エッセイスト。カダフィ政権下のリビアや亡命、家族の喪失を自身の経験と重ねながら描いてきた。デビュー小説『リビアの小さな赤い実』（原題 In the Country of Men）は2006年ブッカー賞の最終候補となり、『帰還 父と息子を分かつ国』（原題 The Return: Fathers, Sons and the Land in Between）で2017年ピュリッツァー賞伝記部門を受賞。同作は、カダフィ政権に反対し、亡命先から拉致されて消息を絶った父の行方を追って、マタールが政権崩壊後のリビアへ帰還する過程をたどりながら、独裁によって引き裂かれた家族の歴史と、父を待ち続けた年月を綴ったノンフィクションである。
Hisham Matar (born 1970) is a novelist and essayist born in New York to Libyan parents and raised in Tripoli and Cairo. Drawing partly on his own experience, his work explores Libya under Muammar Gaddafi, exile, political repression, and the loss of family. His debut novel, "In the Country of Men," was shortlisted for the 2006 Booker Prize, and his memoir "The Return: Fathers, Sons and the Land in Between" won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Biography. The memoir follows Matar’s return to Libya after the fall of Gaddafi as he searches for answers about his father, a prominent dissident who was abducted in exile and imprisoned in Libya, tracing both a family torn apart by dictatorship and the long years a son spent waiting for news of his father.
