Toshiaki Hiromitsu is a Japanese economist and government official. After graduating from the University of Tokyo, he joined Japan's Ministry of Finance and later earned an M.Phil. in Economics from the University of Oxford and a Ph.D. in Economics from Hitotsubashi University. His research spans macroeconomics, political economy, behavioral economics, and political philosophy, with a particular focus on fiscal policy and intergenerational issues. His book "Resolving Intergenerational Conflicts: An Approach from Philosophy, Economics, and Experiments," the English edition of his Nikkei Prize-winning Japanese work, examines conflicts between present and future generations over issues such as climate change and fiscal sustainability. Combining philosophy, economics, and experimental methods, it explores how reciprocity, ethical principles, and the inclusion of imagined representatives of future generations in policy deliberations can encourage cooperation across generations.
