Hideaki Hiraga (born 1956) is a Japanese translator of English-language fiction and nonfiction concerning war, international politics, and security. After graduating from Waseda University, he worked at the China News Agency and Kyodo News before becoming a translator. His translation of Lawrence Wright’s “The Looming Tower” traces the formation of al-Qaeda and the work of American intelligence agencies in the years leading to the attacks of September 11, 2001. In Antony Beevor’s “D-Day,” he translated a history of the Normandy campaign that combines military operations with the experiences of soldiers and civilians caught in the fighting. Hiraga also translated David E. Hoffman’s “The Dead Hand.” That investigation examined American and Soviet nuclear and biological weapons programs, decisions made by political leaders, and the dangers that remained after the Cold War ended.
