Yayoi Himukai is a Japanese translator of books on medicine, life science, and the environment. Born in Aizuwakamatsu, Himukai studied pharmacy at Tohoku University and worked at the Miyagi Prefectural Institute of Public Health before entering translation. In Adam Kucharski’s “The Rules of Contagion,” Himukai translated an investigation extending mathematical approaches to epidemics into financial crises and the spread of online information. The book considers how networks influence apparently different forms of contagion. Himukai also translated Pernille Rørth’s “Raw Data: A Novel on Life in Science,” a novel in which inconsistencies in experimental results expose problems of research ethics amid the pressures of publication and scientific competition. In Esther M. Sternberg’s “The Balance Within,” Himukai worked on an account of relationships between mind and body through the interactions of the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems.
