Kazutoshi Hando (1930–2021) was a Japanese writer, historian, and editor specializing in the history of modern Japan, particularly the Showa era. After graduating from the University of Tokyo, he joined Bungeishunju and served as editor-in-chief of both "Shukan Bunshun" and "Bungeishunju," later becoming a senior executive at the company. After leaving publishing, he wrote extensively on Japan’s modern history, describing himself as a "history detective." His "Showa-shi 1926-1945" and "Showa-shi Sengo-hen 1945-1989" received a special prize at the Mainichi Publishing Culture Awards. Together, the books trace Japan from the Manchurian Incident and the Pacific War through defeat, occupation, postwar economic growth, and the end of the Showa era, examining not only political and military decisions but also the social attitudes that shaped Japan’s path to war and its subsequent reconstruction.
