湯川秀樹（ゆかわ・ひでき、1907–1981）日本を代表する理論物理学者。1935年に中間子理論を発表し、その先駆的な研究により1949年、日本人初のノーベル物理学賞を受賞した。京都大学教授、京都大学基礎物理学研究所初代所長。素粒子物理学の礎を築くとともに、科学と人間、平和について積極的に発言し、多くの随筆や評論を著した。科学者としてだけでなく、20世紀日本を代表する知識人の一人としても高く評価されている。

Hideki Yukawa (1907–1981) was a Japanese theoretical physicist and the first Japanese recipient of the Nobel Prize, receiving the 1949 Nobel Prize in Physics for his pioneering meson theory. A professor at Kyoto University and the founding director of the Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics, he laid the foundations of particle physics in Japan. Beyond his scientific achievements, Yukawa wrote extensively on science, humanity, and peace, earning recognition as one of Japan's foremost public intellectuals of the twentieth century.
