Yu Miri (1968–) is a Korean-Japanese playwright and novelist. Beginning her career in theatre, she has written fiction, plays, and essays about fractured families, life and death, the Korean experience in Japan, and people pushed to the margins of society. She received the Akutagawa Prize in 1997 for “Family Cinema,” which depicts an estranged family reunited to portray itself in a film. After the 2011 earthquake and nuclear disaster, she moved to Minamisoma in Fukushima Prefecture, where she established a bookstore and a space for theatrical activities. “Tokyo Ueno Station,” narrated by the ghost of a homeless former migrant worker in Ueno Park, won the 2020 National Book Award for Translated Literature in Morgan Giles’s English translation.
